No doubt NBC hastily threw together the ‘Dateline’ ‘Going For Gold’ special. They needed something to air prior to the Golden Globes press conference announcing winners. The most odd moment of the preshow hosted by Matt Lauer was to see Chris Hanson interviewing William Shatner (from ‘Boston Legal’). Hanson, as you know, is the face of ‘To Catch a Predator’... the sex-offender-gotcha-on-tape series that ranks very highly for ‘Dateline’. Hanson interviewing anyone now after ‘Predator’ will seem odd. Just as actors are type cast after very successful roles, Hanson will lug the baggage (or credit if you love the ‘Predator’ approach) around for years to come in his career. Add to that the oddity that Hanson was assigned to interview Shatner who plays sexist, often perverted, Denny Crane on ‘Boston Legal’.. and you have a perfect, Perverted Justice – ‘To Catch A Predator’ combo! By the way, more proof that NBC pulled this together quickly, they called on everyone who contributes to ‘Dateline’ for help: Matt Lauer, Natalie Morales, Chris Hanson, Hotb, Josh Mankowitz and others.
UPDATE: Another odd thing is the use of the ‘Football Night in America’ crew. It’s just out of place in this otherwise profile-driven show. Still, Hanson interviewing perverted Denny Crane was classic!
