PageSix.com Launches; Did TMZ.com Respond With Design Upgrades?

I’ve been watching the launch of PageSix.com for news and just how the site grows. In previous posts, I’ve talked about how much of a ‘fan’ I am of TMZ.com. The support comes not from my need for celebrity gossip but because I believe TMZ created the next layer of entertainment news coverage. Now everyone else is catching up.

That said, TMZ.com had a very basic blog-style look. There were a lot of widgets stacked on top of each other. Pictures and videos became widgets with text rarely wrapping. I didn’t have a problem with it. It felt like a down and dirty site that was more about content than design. Along comes PageSix.com about 3 weeks ago from the New York Post. PageSix.com added a little more flavor in design which included a more tailored font, additional columns, better designs inside the widgets. No big deal right?

Well TMZ.com has now refined its look. It looks like a new font. There are more contextual photos woven into the content instead stacked on top of each other. The header graphic matches more of the red and black look from TMZ on TV. The content column seems wider. The Web 2.0 tools create more of ‘fence’ look at the bottom of each story widget. Once you start comparing the two, there are a lot of similarities. No one at PageSix of TMZ can argue that there site is TOTALLY UNIQUE. From an outside’s view, it’s similar. Don’t get me wrong. I like them both. It was just interesting this week to see the upgrade in look from TMZ… just days after PageSix launched a decent site.
